Quantitative Image Analysis

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is used for the evaluation of tumor markers. The degree of expression of IHC markers in tissue provides critical information for diagnosis and prognosis. Computer image analysis techniques have decreased the effect of observer biases, and increased usefulness of IHC as a tissue-based procedure for evaluation of diseases.

For example, in breast cancer specimens, the degree of expression of Estrogen Receptor (ER), Progesterone Receptor (PR), and amplification of HER-2/neu, and several other markers, are assessed by Quantitative Image Analysis. The results are shown in a clear format, using graphics software, which oncologists use for interpretation and selection of therapy. Quantitative Image Analysis has found wider acceptance in a variety of other cancers such as colorectal cancer, prostate cancers and lymphomas.
